Why did I chose to teach?
My philosophy of education evolves as I mature as a teacher. Just a few years ago my teaching style didn’t have a name, but can now be defined as STEM. I am a lifelong learner and will continue to integrate new ideas, philosophies, and technologies into my teaching style until my final days as a teacher.
Project based learning is a large part of my classroom. I believe that students should own their own knowledge by creating solutions to real world problems. Creating meaningful curriculum out of current situations can only bring further meaning to lessons that may not work for every student. Each student learns in a different way and as a teacher I must provide differentiated instruction through projects and discussion that allows the entire class to learn and thrive. Integrating different subjects into project work is beneficial in order to make connections across the curriculum and keeps the students intyerested in learning.
I expect all of my students to achieve their own goals and give me their best work. Each student is held to the same high standards and is encouraged to seek assistance when needed. I will always be there for my students and together we will be successful academically, socially, and emotionally. An educator must see the student as a whole child and not just the test scores printed on a piece of paper.
Cultural diversity is a wonderful part of being an American. It is important for my class to not only represent the different cultures of my students but also of the world. I find that empathy starts with understanding different cultures and walks of life. The research involved in cultural projects can build self-confidence and self-worth as well as address any issues with bullying. I love to incorporate different cultural celebrations in the classroom and strive to teach tolerance and acceptance within our community.
My goal is to produce students that are valuable members of our community. They will have manners, self-respect, respect for others, and the ability to compromise. In order to achieve this I incorporate daily discussions on being a role model and what it means to be respectful. My class works together to make sure everyone is a productive member of the classroom.
I look forward to my 2nd year as a teacher and hope that my philosophy will grow and change even further. My favorite part of teaching is watching my students understand a concept that they may not have before. I can almost see a light bulb coming to life. It is the greatest feeling to know that I helped bring that idea into existence.
